Marine plywood is plywood manufactured to IS 710, the Indian Standard for boiling water proof grade. Every panel is bonded with phenol formaldehyde resin, built from hardwood veneers, treated with preservative through the full thickness, and required to survive 72 hours of continuous boiling without the glue line separating. Advance Ply manufactures three certified grades: Tungsten, Palladium and Gold Marine.
What Is Marine Plywood?
Marine plywood is the highest water resistance grade of plywood recognised under Indian Standards. It is manufactured to IS 710, and that certification is not a description a brand can award itself. A board carrying the mark has been licensed by the Bureau of Indian Standards against a defined set of physical tests, and the licence can be checked by anyone holding the board in their hand.
Three things separate it from every other grade sold in India:
- The adhesive is phenol formaldehyde resin, which cures into a glue line that does not soften when it is wet. Ordinary urea formaldehyde and melamine fortified resins hold well in humid air but give way under sustained water contact.
- The core is hardwood. The standard does not permit the mixed and softwood cores that appear in commercial boards, because water resistance fails at the weakest veneer, not the strongest one.
- The panel is preservative treated against termites, borers and fungus. Water resistance on its own is not durability. A board that survives moisture but is eaten from the inside has still failed.
Every Advance Ply marine plywood grade carries all three, and publishes the test values behind them rather than leaving them as adjectives.

Tungsten is specified where the panel has to answer two problems at once, water and fire. Hotels, hospitals, schools, airports and commercial fit outs are governed by fire requirements, and the wet areas inside those buildings still need marine plywood. A single IS 710 plus IS 5509 board removes the need to run two different materials through one project.

Gold Marine carries IS 710 only. It is not fire retardant certified, and Advance Ply states that plainly rather than letting the grade name imply it.

The practical reading of this table is short. If the project carries a fire requirement, the choice is between Tungsten and Palladium. If it does not, Gold Marine delivers the same boiling water proof performance without paying for a certification the project will never be asked to prove.
IS 710 and IS 5509 on the Same Marine Plywood Board
Almost nothing in the Indian market carries both certifications on one panel. Most brands sell a marine range and a separate fire retardant range, which means a fire rated wet area has to be built from a board that is strong on one requirement and silent on the other.
Advance Ply Tungsten and Advance Ply Palladium hold both. The board is boiling water proof under IS 710 and fire retardant under IS 5509, and the fire numbers are published rather than described.

Where Marine Plywood Is Used?
Modular kitchens
The sink base and the area under the hob are the two points where kitchen cabinets fail first. The grade belongs in the carcass there, not only in the shutters, because failure starts at the bottom panel and the back panel where spillage collects.
Bathrooms
Vanity units, under basin storage and mirror cabinets sit in standing humidity for years. Marine plywood is the only grade tested for that condition.
Coastal and high humidity homes
Salt laden air attacks the glue line and the fixings together. Boiling water proof boards combined with CCB preservative treatment are specified across coastal Kerala, Goa, Konkan, Chennai and the Andaman belt for exactly this reason.
Balconies, utility areas and washing zones
Semi exterior locations that take direct rain through the monsoon.
Marine and boat interiors
Bulkheads, berths, cabin joinery and dock side fit outs, the application the grade takes its name from.
Commercial interiors
Hotels, hospitals, laboratories and institutional buildings where wet areas also carry a fire requirement, which is where the dual certified grades apply.
How to Check Whether Marine Plywood Is Genuine?
The claim is easy to make and easy to check. These seven checks take a few minutes at the counter and are worth more than any brochure.

Read the edge of the board, not the sticker
Every licensed panel carries the IS number, the ISI mark and a CM/L licence number printed on the edge. Look for IS 710. If the edge says IS 303, it is not a marine grade board, whatever the product is called.

Verify the CM/L number
The licence number can be checked on the BIS Care app. A number that does not resolve, or that resolves to a different product, is the end of the conversation.

Check the product name against the standard
A product named 710 is not automatically an IS 710 product. Several boards in the Indian market carry 710 in the name while being licensed under IS 303. The name is not the certification.

Ask for the technical specification sheet
A genuine manufacturer will hand over density, screw holding, compressive strength, glue shear values in both dry and wet state, and preservative retention. A seller who cannot produce the sheet is selling a description.

Look at the cut edge
The veneers should be tight, even and hardwood, with no visible core gaps or overlaps. Gaps in the core are where water travels and where screws lose grip.

Lift the sheet
A hardwood board is noticeably heavier than a poplar or rubberwood panel of the same size and thickness. Density is published for a reason, and weight is the quickest field check of it.

Boil a sample
Ask the dealer for an offcut and boil it. A genuine board holds its glue line. A lower grade panel begins to separate at the edges. This is the same principle as the laboratory boiling test, run at kitchen scale.
If you are buying Advance Ply marine plywood, ask the dealer for the warranty certificate at the time of billing. The warranty is registered against the invoice, not against the conversation.
Which Thickness to Specify?
Thickness is the decision most buyers get wrong, usually by paying for 19mm everywhere or by using 12mm where 19mm was needed. All three grades run from 6mm to 19mm.

Standard sheet sizes across the range are 8×4 ft, 7×4 ft, 6×4 ft, 8×3 ft, 7×3 ft and 6×3 ft.
A note on 18mm
18mm is a common size in the Indian plywood market and many buyers ask for it by name. The Advance Ply marine plywood range is:
Where a drawing or a carpenter specifies 18mm for a carcass, shutter or wardrobe, 19mm is the equivalent in this range and gives slightly more screw holding and panel stiffness.
Confirm the final dimension with your fabricator before cutting, because the extra millimetre affects groove and edge banding allowances.
What Decides the Cost of a Marine Grade Board?
Advance Ply does not publish a fixed rate, because the final figure depends on where the board is going and in what quantity, and because dealers set retail rates in according to their own market. These are the variables that move it.

A quotation is only comparable to another quotation when both are for the same grade, the same standard, the same thickness and the same sheet size. Two rates for boards described as marine plywood can be certified under completely different standards.

What IS 710 Certification Actually Requires?
Most pages in this category repeat the phrase “IS 710 certified” without saying what the board had to pass. This is the part a specifier needs, because it is the only way to judge whether a claim is real.

Advance Ply publishes its result for every one of these rows on each product page. Very few Indian brands publish wet state values at all, and wet state values are the only ones that describe how a panel behaves in the application it was bought for.
Is BWP Grade the Same as Marine Plywood?
This is the most confused question in the category, and the confusion costs buyers money.
BWP stands for boiling water proof. Marine grade is the name of the grade. Under Indian Standards the two describe the same board, because IS 710 is the standard that defines boiling water proof grade plywood. A genuine BWP panel is an IS 710 panel. If a seller offers you BWP plywood certified under IS 303, the grade name and the standard do not agree, because IS 303 covers only MR and BWR grades.
That mismatch is the most common way a buyer pays a premium price for a board that is not what it was sold as.

The number printed on the edge of the board is the fact. The name of the product is marketing. When the two disagree, the edge marking wins, and Advance Ply recommends applying that rule to every brand, including this one.
How IS 710 Compares with BWR and MR Grade?
The three grades are not versions of the same board at different prices. They are tested under different conditions and built for different levels of exposure.

A kitchen sink base, a bathroom vanity or a balcony storage unit sits in the top row. Anything else moves down the table. Specifying marine plywood for a dry bedroom wardrobe is over specification, and specifying MR grade under a sink is the reason cabinets swell within three monsoons.
Common Mistakes When Buying Marine Plywood
Buying the name instead of the standard
The most expensive mistake in the category. Read the IS number on the edge.
Using the marine grade for shutters and a lower grade for the carcass
The carcass is what sits in the water. Reversing this is common, and it is the reason kitchens fail from the inside.
Ignoring the edges after cutting
Every cut exposes an untreated edge. Seal or edge band every cut face, including the hidden ones at the back of a cabinet.
Assuming a waterproof board needs no finish outdoors
Water resistance is one problem. Ultraviolet exposure is a separate one, and outdoor panels still need a surface finish.
Treating fire retardant and marine as the same claim
They are two different certifications under two different standards. A board is fire retardant only if it carries IS 5509.
Not collecting the warranty certificate
A warranty that was never registered at billing is difficult to claim years later, which is exactly when it is needed.
